Altitude Safety Guide

India's Himalayan region spans from 1,500m to 7,000m+ peaks. Proper preparation ensures safe trekking:

Know Your Altitude

Kangchenjunga (8,586m) and peaks in Ladakh reach extreme altitudes. Most treks like Chopta-Chandrashila or Kedarkantha are moderate (3,000-4,000m). High passes like Stok Kangri require careful preparation.

Gradual Ascent

Follow the golden rule: ascend no more than 300-500m per day above 3,000m. Take rest days for acclimatization. In Leh-Ladakh, spend 2-3 days adjusting before high-altitude treks.

Hydration and Nutrition

Drink 3-4 liters of water daily at high altitudes. Eat energy-rich foods. Avoid alcohol during first days. The dry mountain air increases fluid loss through breathing.

Recognize AMS Early

Headache, nausea, dizziness, and loss of appetite are warning signs. Rest and don't ascend until symptoms improve. If symptoms worsen, descend immediately by at least 500m.

Emergency Evacuation

Helicopter services available in popular trekking areas. In remote Ladakh, evacuation may take longer. Ensure your insurance covers high-altitude medical evacuation in India.
